COMEX Metals Analysis: Copper extends its advance as gold and silver remain below averages

By Finoways Research TeamPublished 14 Oct 2026, 07:30 UAEInstruments: Gold (GC), Silver (SI), Copper (HG)

COMEX metals are mixed on 14 October. Gold and Silver remain below their 20-day and 50-day moving averages, with RSI readings below 50 indicating softer momentum. Copper is holding above both averages and remains near its 20-day and 60-day high at 6.83. US CPI at 16:30 UAE today and several high-impact releases at the same time on Thursday are the main volatility risks.

What to watch today

  • Gold: 4190.6 pivot, 4211.5 resistance and 4156.4 support.
  • Silver: 59.16 pivot reference, 58.88 20-day low and 61.44 EMA20.
  • Copper: 6.736 pivot R2, 6.789 latest high and 6.83 20-day high.

Technical analysis

Gold (GC)

Bearish 4,181.0 +0.09% live

Gold closed at 4191.2, just above its pivot at 4190.6, after gaining 0.33% on the day. However, the broader structure remains soft: the price is below the SMA20 at 4241.9, the SMA50 at 4381.2, and the EMA20 at 4237.6. The 20-day change is -4.47%.

The RSI, a momentum measure ranging from 0 to 100, is at 42, which shows subdued momentum without reaching the commonly watched oversold area. ATR, the average daily trading range, is 74.8, so intraday moves may remain wide around US inflation data.

A sustained move above 4211.5 could bring the pivot R2 at 4245.7 and the EMA20 into focus. A move below 4156.4 would expose 4135.5, followed by the 20-day low at 4091.2.

Bullish scenarioIf Gold holds above 4190.6 and clears 4211.5, watch whether momentum can extend toward 4245.7 and the EMA20 at 4237.6.
Bearish scenarioIf Gold falls below 4156.4, watch for pressure toward 4135.5 and then the 20-day low at 4091.2.

Silver (SI)

Bearish 59.33 +0.29% live

Silver is below its SMA20 at 61.95 and SMA50 at 64.18, near the bottom of its 20-day range from 58.88 to 66.94.

Silver closed at 59.53, up 0.62% on the day but down 7.41% over 20 days. The price remains below the SMA20 at 61.95, the SMA50 at 64.18, and the EMA20 at 61.44. Its 20-day low is 58.88, which is also the latest session low.

The RSI is 40.2, pointing to weak momentum, while the ATR is 1.18. The daily pivot readings are all shown at 59.16, making that level the immediate reference for whether the modest rebound can continue.

Holding above 59.16 would leave the EMA20 at 61.44 as the next notable overhead level, followed by the SMA20 at 61.95. A break below 58.88 would place the 60-day low at 57.22 on watch.

Bullish scenarioIf Silver holds above 59.16, watch for a recovery toward the EMA20 at 61.44 and the SMA20 at 61.95.
Bearish scenarioIf Silver breaks below 58.88, watch whether selling pressure extends toward the 60-day low at 57.22.

Copper (HG)

Bullish 6.765 +1.30% live

Copper is above its SMA20 at 6.624 and SMA50 at 6.590, trading close to the 20-day and 60-day high at 6.83.

Copper closed at 6.775, gaining 1.45% on the day and 5.34% over 20 days. It is above the SMA20 at 6.624, the SMA50 at 6.590, and the EMA20 at 6.615. The price is also near the 20-day and 60-day high at 6.83.

The RSI is 60.676, indicating positive momentum without reaching the commonly watched overbought area. ATR is 0.076, so the normal daily range remains meaningful relative to the quoted price. The pivot is 6.683, with pivot R1 at 6.707 and pivot R2 at 6.736.

Holding above 6.736 would keep the recent upward structure intact and put the latest high at 6.789 and the 20-day high at 6.83 in focus. A move back below 6.707 would shift attention toward the pivot at 6.683.

Bullish scenarioIf Copper holds above 6.736, watch the latest high at 6.789 and the 20-day high at 6.83 for evidence of continued strength.
Bearish scenarioIf Copper falls below 6.707, watch whether the retreat extends toward the pivot at 6.683 and pivot R1 at 6.707.

The most important event for Gold, Silver and Copper is the US CPI release at 16:30 UAE on Wednesday. Core CPI is forecast at 0.2% month on month and 2.5% year on year, while headline CPI is forecast at 0.6% month on month and 3.6% year on year. Inflation data can quickly affect the US dollar and interest-rate expectations, which may produce sharp two-way moves in precious metals and spill over into Copper.

Several lower-impact Federal Reserve speakers are scheduled, including Bowman at 13:40 UAE, Barkin at 21:30 UAE and Goolsbee at 23:00 UAE on Wednesday. A Beige Book release is scheduled for 22:00 UAE. Their market effect may depend on whether comments alter expectations around monetary policy.

Thursday’s main concentration is at 16:30 UAE, when Core PPI, PPI, Core Retail Sales, Retail Sales, the Philly Fed Manufacturing Index and Unemployment Claims are scheduled together. These releases can increase volatility across all three metals, while the manufacturing and retail figures may be especially relevant to Copper’s growth-sensitive price action. Crude Oil Inventories at 20:00 UAE may also affect broader commodities sentiment.

Algo insight: how a rules-based system treats today

A rules-based approach would separate the instruments by volatility and trend state rather than treating the COMEX complex as one market. Gold’s ATR is 74.8 and Silver’s is 1.18, so any risk distance should reflect their wider daily movement; position sizing can be reduced when the required ATR-based distance becomes large. Copper’s ATR is 0.076, but its proximity to 6.83 still calls for confirmation rather than assuming that momentum will continue.

With high-impact US inflation data at 16:30 UAE and another cluster of releases at the same time on Thursday, an algorithm may avoid opening fresh exposure immediately around the announcements, wait for spreads and volatility to stabilise, and then reassess whether price holds above or below the stated levels. Lower-impact speeches can still be monitored for sudden changes in volatility.

Session timing should be incorporated into the rules, with separate checks for the period before the US data, the release window, and the post-release reaction. A systematic process can also limit total exposure when Gold and Silver are responding to the same US macroeconomic catalyst.
