Forex Market Analysis: Dollar pairs diverge as CPI risk meets mixed technical signals

By Finoways Research TeamPublished 14 Oct 2026, 07:30 UAEInstruments: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/INR

EUR/USD is recovering modestly but remains below its 20-day and 50-day averages, keeping the broader structure weak. GBP/USD is close to its 20-day average after a small daily gain, while USD/JPY remains above both key averages despite slipping below its daily pivot. USD/INR has fallen sharply and trades below its pivot and moving averages. US CPI at 16:30 UAE time is the main event risk for all four pairs, followed by several high-impact US releases on Thursday.

What to watch today

  • EUR/USD: 1.1224 resistance, 1.1174 pivot and 16:30 UAE US CPI.
  • GBP/USD: 1.3272 resistance, 1.3241 support and 10:00 UAE Thursday GDP.
  • USD/JPY: 158.29 pivot, 158.74 resistance and 158.07 support.
  • USD/INR: 95.88 resistance, 94.98 support and the 94.87 20-day low.
  • Thursday 16:30 UAE: US PPI, retail sales, manufacturing data and unemployment claims.

Technical analysis

EUR/USD

Bearish 1.1210 +0.45% live

EUR/USD remains below its SMA20 at 1.1324 and SMA50 at 1.1490, with the 20-day range extending from 1.1155 to 1.1498 despite a one-day recovery.

Resistance1.1224  |  1.1324

EUR/USD closed at 1.1213 after rising 0.48% on the day, but it remains 2.81% lower over 20 days. The price is below the 20-day simple moving average, or SMA20, at 1.1324 and the 50-day average at 1.1490. This keeps the wider technical bias weak even though the 14-day relative strength index, or RSI, is 31.1, a level that shows selling pressure has been persistent and the pair is approaching oversold territory.

The pair is above the pivot at 1.1174, a reference level calculated from the prior session, and is also above pivot resistance at 1.1192. A sustained move above 1.1224 could bring the SMA20 at 1.1324 into focus. If the pair loses 1.1174, the 1.1155 20-day low and pivot support at 1.1141 become important downside reference levels.

Bullish scenarioIf EUR/USD holds above 1.1192 and clears 1.1224, continued recovery toward the SMA20 at 1.1324 would become technically more credible.
Bearish scenarioIf EUR/USD falls below 1.1174, attention would turn to 1.1155 and then pivot support at 1.1141, while the RSI would remain a sign of elevated downside pressure.

GBP/USD

Neutral 1.3272 +0.47% live

GBP/USD is just above its SMA20 at 1.3269 but below its SMA50 at 1.3432, leaving the pair consolidating within a 20-day range of 1.3182 to 1.3407.

Resistance1.3272  |  1.3407

GBP/USD rose 0.49% to 1.3274 and is almost unchanged over five days, suggesting short-term stabilisation after a weaker 20-day period. The close is marginally above the SMA20 at 1.3269 but remains below the SMA50 at 1.3432. RSI is 45.7, which is broadly neutral and does not by itself show an extended condition.

The pair is above the pivot at 1.3223 and has moved slightly above pivot resistance at 1.3272. Holding above 1.3269 would support a test of the 20-day high at 1.3407, although the SMA50 at 1.3432 remains a higher resistance reference. A return below 1.3241 would weaken the short-term structure and bring the pivot at 1.3223 into view.

Bullish scenarioIf GBP/USD holds above 1.3269 and sustains trade above 1.3272, the 1.3407 20-day high would be the next important upside reference.
Bearish scenarioIf GBP/USD slips below 1.3241, a move back toward the pivot at 1.3223 and then 1.3192 would indicate renewed short-term weakness.

USD/JPY

Bullish 158.29 -0.14% live

USD/JPY remains above its SMA20 at 157.69 and SMA50 at 157.71, with a positive 20-day change and a recent range between 155.34 and 159.00.

USD/JPY eased 0.20% to 158.21 but remains 1.89% higher over 20 days. The price is above the SMA20 at 157.69, the SMA50 at 157.71 and the 20-day pivot at 158.29 by a narrow margin relative to the pair’s 0.94 ATR14. ATR, or average true range, measures typical daily movement, so this relatively large range measure suggests that breaks around nearby levels may be accompanied by wider fluctuations.

A move back above the pivot at 158.29 would keep the 158.74 and 158.96 pivot resistance levels in focus, followed by the 20-day high at 159.00. If the pair remains below 158.29, support at 158.07 and 157.62 becomes relevant. RSI is 54.6, indicating moderate upward momentum without an extreme reading.

Bullish scenarioIf USD/JPY reclaims and holds above 158.29, the pair could retest 158.74 and 158.96 while remaining above both key moving averages.
Bearish scenarioIf USD/JPY breaks below 158.07, a deeper pullback toward 157.62 and the SMA20 at 157.69 would weaken the current upward structure.

USD/INR

Bearish 94.81 -1.01% live

USD/INR has fallen below its SMA20 at 96.12, SMA50 at 95.57 and EMA20 at 96.10, with the latest price near the lower part of its 20-day range.

USD/INR is quoted at 95.28 after the latest session close at 95.78, with a one-day decline of 1.03%. The pair is below the SMA20 at 96.12, the EMA20 at 96.10 and the SMA50 at 95.57. The move places price close to the 20-day low at 94.87, while RSI at 47.0 is neutral rather than oversold.

The pivot is at 96.33, with pivot support at 95.88 and 94.98. Because the current price is below 95.88, the 94.98 level and the 94.87 20-day low are the immediate downside references. A recovery above 95.88 would be needed to stabilise the short-term picture, with 96.12 and the pivot at 96.33 acting as higher resistance references.

Bullish scenarioIf USD/INR recovers above 95.88 and then holds above 96.12, the pivot at 96.33 would become the next technical level to monitor.
Bearish scenarioIf USD/INR remains below 95.88 and breaks 94.98, the pair could retest the 20-day low at 94.87.

The main event for dollar pairs is the US CPI release at 16:30 UAE time on Wednesday. Core CPI is forecast at 0.2% month on month and 2.5% year on year, while headline CPI is forecast at 0.6% month on month and 3.6% year on year. Higher or lower results than expected can produce sharp moves in the US dollar and wider short-term ranges across EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY and USD/INR.

EUR/USD also has ECB President Lagarde speaking at 06:10 and 12:30 UAE time on Wednesday, followed by the EU Economic Summit at 14:15. GBP/USD is sensitive to the BOE Governor Bailey speech at 09:30 Wednesday and the high-impact UK GDP release at 10:00 UAE time on Thursday, where the forecast is -0.1% month on month versus 0.4% previously.

US markets face another concentrated release window at 16:30 UAE time on Thursday, including Core PPI, PPI, core retail sales, retail sales, the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index and unemployment claims. These releases can affect dollar volatility across all four pairs. Several FOMC member speeches and the Beige Book are also scheduled, but they carry low impact in the calendar.

Algo insight: how a rules-based system treats today

A rules-based approach would separate the broader trend from short-term recovery signals. EUR/USD remains below both major averages, while GBP/USD is close to its SMA20 and USD/JPY remains above its moving averages. USD/INR is below its short- and medium-term averages. These mixed conditions favour waiting for a confirmed level break rather than treating a single daily move as a complete trend change.

ATR14 measures typical daily price movement and is 0.0069 for EUR/USD, 0.0066 for GBP/USD, 0.94 for USD/JPY and 0.63 for USD/INR. An algorithm can use these readings to scale position size and set volatility-adjusted stop distances, with smaller exposure when the required distance is large. It can also avoid opening or adjusting positions immediately around the high-impact US CPI release at 16:30 UAE time and the Thursday US data window, when spreads and price swings may increase.

Session filters can distinguish the quieter Asian hours from the European and US sessions, when these currency pairs may respond more actively to their scheduled regional events. Any rules should be tested across different volatility conditions and should not be treated as a guarantee of results.
