COMEX Metals Analysis: Gold and silver stay soft as copper holds above trend support

By Finoways Research TeamPublished 30 Sep 2026, 07:30 UAEInstruments: Gold (GC), Silver (SI), Copper (HG)

Gold and silver remain under pressure on a 20-day and 50-day moving-average basis, despite both gaining on the latest session. Copper is holding above its 20-day and 50-day averages, giving it the strongest technical structure of the three metals. US inflation, GDP and employment releases at 16:30 UAE time could increase volatility across COMEX metals. The broader COMEX picture is mixed, so confirmation around the stated levels remains important.

What to watch today

  • Gold (GC): pivot 4181, resistance 4216.8 and 4253.9; watch the 16:30 UAE US releases.
  • Silver (SI): support 60.79 and 60.38, with resistance at 61.49 and EMA20 at 64.04.
  • Copper (HG): support 6.589 and 6.554; sustained trade above 6.634 keeps 6.83 in focus.
  • Wednesday 16:15 and 16:30 UAE: ADP, Core PCE and Final GDP may increase volatility.
  • Thursday 16:30 and 18:00 UAE: Unemployment Claims and ISM Manufacturing PMI.

Gold (GC)

Bearish 4,212.8 +0.79% live

Gold (GC) closed at 4211.7, up 0.77% on the day but down 2.47% over five sessions and 4.20% over 20 sessions. The price remains below the SMA20 at 4365.1 and SMA50 at 4363.5, keeping the broader daily structure bearish. RSI, a momentum measure ranging from 0 to 100, is at 37.6, showing weak momentum without being deeply oversold.

The daily pivot, a reference level calculated from the prior session, is at 4181. Holding above it could keep attention on pivot resistance at 4216.8 and 4253.9. A move back below 4181 would bring the pivot support at 4143.9 and the 20-day low at 4143.1 into focus.

ATR14, which measures typical recent price movement, is 91.5. This indicates that moves around the 4181 to 4253.9 area may be relatively wide, particularly around the scheduled US releases.

Bullish scenarioIf Gold (GC) holds above 4181 and clears 4216.8, sustained trade above 4253.9 would provide stronger evidence that short-term downside pressure is easing.
Bearish scenarioIf Gold (GC) falls below 4181, a test of 4143.9 and the 20-day low at 4143.1 would become more relevant.

Silver (SI)

Bearish 61.47 +1.31% live

Silver (SI) is below its SMA20 at 64.55 and SMA50 at 63.86, trading close to the lower portion of its 20-day range.

Silver (SI) closed at 61.46, gaining 1.30% in the latest session but remaining down 4.55% over five sessions and 4.89% over 20 sessions. It is below the SMA20 at 64.55, SMA50 at 63.86 and EMA20 at 64.04, which keeps the daily trend structure weak. RSI is 40.71, indicating subdued momentum rather than an extreme reading.

Silver is above the daily pivot at 60.79 and close to pivot resistance at 61.49. Holding above 60.79 could support a test of 61.49 and then the EMA20 at 64.04. A break below 60.79 would place pivot support at 60.38 and the 20-day low at 60.49 on watch.

ATR14 is 1.30, so normal daily fluctuations are material relative to the current price. This makes confirmation around 60.79 and 61.49 important, especially during the US data window.

Bullish scenarioIf Silver (SI) holds above 60.79 and moves through 61.49, continued strength toward the EMA20 at 64.04 would suggest improving short-term momentum.
Bearish scenarioIf Silver (SI) loses 60.79, weakness toward 60.38 and the 20-day low at 60.49 would remain possible.

Copper (HG)

Bullish 6.636 +1.41% live

Copper (HG) is above its SMA20 at 6.588 and SMA50 at 6.550, with price in the upper half of its 20-day range.

Copper (HG) closed at 6.634, up 1.38% on the day and 1.96% over 20 sessions, although it is down 0.66% over five sessions. Price remains above the SMA20 at 6.588, SMA50 at 6.550 and EMA20 at 6.598. RSI is 52.688, indicating balanced-to-positive momentum rather than an overstretched condition.

The daily pivot is at 6.554, while pivot resistance is marked at 6.589 and 6.634. Holding above 6.589 would keep the upper part of the range in focus, with the 20-day and 60-day highs at 6.83 as the broader resistance reference. A move below 6.554 would weaken the current structure and expose pivot support at 6.509.

ATR14 is 0.098, showing that copper can experience meaningful daily movement relative to its quoted price. Range expansion around the US releases should therefore be treated cautiously.

Bullish scenarioIf Copper (HG) holds above 6.589 and sustains trade above 6.634, the 20-day and 60-day highs at 6.83 would become the next major reference area.
Bearish scenarioIf Copper (HG) falls below 6.554, a move toward pivot support at 6.509 would indicate that the recent positive structure is weakening.

The most important scheduled events for COMEX metals are the US Core PCE Price Index, Final GDP and Final GDP Price Index at 16:30 UAE time on Wednesday. Core PCE has a high impact rating, with a forecast of 0.3% versus 0.2% previously, while Final GDP is forecast at 1.5%.

  • 16:15 UAE: ADP Non-Farm Employment Change, a medium-impact employment release. Employment surprises can affect expectations for economic growth and interest rates, often increasing movement in precious metals.
  • 16:30 UAE: Core PCE, Final GDP and related US releases. Inflation and growth surprises can produce sharp two-way reactions in Gold (GC), Silver (SI) and Copper (HG).
  • 16:30 UAE on Thursday: Unemployment Claims, with a forecast of 201K versus 197K previously.
  • 18:00 UAE on Thursday: ISM Manufacturing PMI, forecast at 54.8 versus 54.6 previously. Manufacturing data can be particularly relevant for Copper (HG).

Algo insight: how a rules-based system treats today

A rules-based approach would distinguish the instruments rather than apply one COMEX view to all three. Gold (GC) and Silver (SI) are below their SMA20 and SMA50, while Copper (HG) is above both averages. Such trend filters can help prevent treating a one-day rebound as a confirmed change in direction.

ATR14 measures recent volatility and can guide risk controls: 91.5 for Gold (GC), 1.30 for Silver (SI) and 0.098 for Copper (HG). Wider expected movement calls for appropriately wider stop distances and smaller position sizing if risk limits are kept constant; these figures do not indicate a guaranteed outcome.

Because high-impact US releases are scheduled at 16:30 UAE time on Wednesday, an algorithm may reduce exposure, require stronger confirmation or avoid opening positions around the release window. Session timing and liquidity checks are also relevant around Thursday's 16:30 and 18:00 UAE events.
